Batman

Watched the new movie "Batman Begins" staring Mr. Bale.

This was, by far, the best Batman movie. I almost passed on this movie, and would of if the reviews had been bad. Yet the A+ reviews drove me to the theater.

The movie is "inspired" by Frank Miller's Batman year one. A lot of things are simmilar (Lt. Gordon, a Batman with a bat summoning device, cops are out to get him). . . but the story is a lot different. The main bad is Scare Crow and Raul Gaul. . .

Overall a great start to the Summer. We also watched the movie "MR. MRS. Smith" which was fun. . .but no Batman.

Troy

2hr30min

Ever hear of the Illiad? The story about someone stealing a woman named Helen and then a entire nation goes to war. . .to get her back? During the course of the war the Gods take sides and fight on both sides of the war?

Well Troy, a new Wolfgang Peterson movie, is that story . . . without the Gods. Gods are mentioned to the course of the movie, some even taunted. .but none show up. Instead we are treated to a “braveheart” spin of the classic story.

This story hays all the players Achilles played by Brad Pitt, Pareus played by Orlando Bloom, Hector played by Eric Banna "me hulk smash", and quite a few other top level actors.

For an action flick this movie had a story. . .It did a fairly good job of balancing every character and toward the end you didn't know who to root for. Achilles, the killing machine, seemed noble and justified. Hector just wants to save his family. . .

Most of the dialogue was mediocre during the movie. . but there were times of greatness. And at the end you did develop a attachment to the characters and were sad to see that Troy played out like the Illiad. . .Even though in this movie you hoped that they might find them in that pesky horse.

I seem to remember other adaptions of the movie favoring the invading Greeks. . especially Achilles and Odessus (who has his own story after Troy.. like a sequel actually called the oddessy). This adaptation rode the fence. . one of the few movies that I ever seen that laid out the motives evenly on both sides. Though there was a bad king (the invading megalon dude). . .but Greeks and Trojans had hero’s that you wanted to see win.

I thought it was great fun, and was well worth the price of admission. Not everyone in my party agreed. One person said they had seen Braveheart one to many times. . and this was the latest. I can see his point, one more historical war piece of people running at each other with swords, clubs, whatever. . .

Overall: worth the price of admission..

Envy

90 some odd minutes
Ben Stiller
Jack black.

Jack Black is on a roll. . .and so is Mr. Stiller. They hit real big with "School of Rock" and "Meet the Parents" . . .but neither of them have shown real love since then. Sure, some of their latest are okay "Ben Stiller along came polly for instance. . .".

To make some cash on Jack and Ben they had to get them together in a movie quickly. . .to bad the plot wasn't written before they signed the actors. . .

In case you did not hear the summary. . .Jack Black gets rich, Stiller gets envious. . and a horse dies. That, gleemed from previews, is also the main plot of the movie. Sure, you also throw in a Christopher Walken as an entertaining horse transporting bum. . .but after that there isn't much to it. . .you get 1hr and 30minutes of envious man, dead horse, and a little bit of an out of control caresoul.

This is one of those movies that have a nice little moral. . .and it all wraps up happily for all parties involved. My issue is that this movie wasn't funny enough. . it was interesting just not that funny.

Most of the movie I was down right bored. . . Instead of heading out this week and seeing Envy, I would recommend renting School of Rock and Meet the Parents. . .

Hopefully. . .Meet the Fockers will be better.

Alien

Tonight turned out be a great time to break out a movie from my Library. Erica has never had the pleasure of seeing the movie "Alien". After much talking, and hyping, I was able to persuade her to watch it. . .

How do you get a non-violent, non-sci fi woman to see a somewhat violent, scary, sci fi movie? Keep going on about the strong female character. . .

Alien is the movie that started the whole “Spooky ship, crew gets killed one by one”. It is still the best of its kind.

Seeing this movie for the first time, through Erica’s eyes, was a great experience. Alien is one of the best horror/sci-fi movies ever made.

True Romance

True romance stars Christian Slater as Clarence. Clarence is a dork of a guy who works at a comic book store and is not normally a star with the ladies. That is until he runs into Alabama (played niceley by Patrica Arquette). It was written by Quentin Tarintino pre Pulp Fiction. The movie follows Clarence and Alabama as they go to California. You see Clarence killed Alabama's pimp, and took his cocaine. . .

Of course in these movies there are always bad guys. . .And this one the bad guys are exceptional including: Christopher Walken, and James Goldifini (pre sopranos about 1/2 the size). The bad guys track Clarence and Alabama to California and the fun begins. . .

This movie is great. . .and a must watch.

DVD sucked. It wasn't anamorphic. . i do not even think it was an DD5.1 title.
